The very first Land Rover Discovery was launched for the general public in 1989.
Whilst it shared its chassis with its ‘big sister’ the Range Rover, the Discovery was initially only available as a 3-door model, and had a unique and interesting interior, which was designed by the Conran Consulting Group. The introduction of the Discovery really did bring the luxury SUV to the mass market for the first time.
Over the following years the level of interior refinement as well as technological advancement established the Discovery as the benchmark in its class, and many design awards followed. The TV program Top Gear even called it “The Best 4 x 4 Ever”.
Originally, the Land Rover Discovery had a steel ladder chassis construction, and this continued until recently, when it was replaced by a clever aluminium monocoque shell, riveted and bonded together.
Available in ‘S’, ‘SE’, ‘HSE’, and ‘HSE Luxury’ derivatives, the Land Rover Discovery now has a stylish fluid body shaping and even plusher interior cabin area. It does, however, still retain its fabled off-road capabilities and work horse reputation. Its leading-edge technology is demonstrated by the option of a new and clever 2.0 litre, 4-cylinder Ingenium diesel engine which produces a healthy torque of 369 lb-ft, but emits a modest 171g per km of carbon dioxide.
